Should I publish my music online before uploading it to Youtube?

I have created some original songs and accompanying videos that I intend to upload to Youtube. Is it really necessary for me to put them through some kind of publishing process before I upload them? I'm not familiar with issues involving copyright and things of that nature. I'd appreciate any relevant information.
